Business is staking a claim for a voice in running the not-for-profit corporation to manage the Internet domain-name system that's slated to be up-and-running on Sept. 30. The U.S., backed by the 15-nation European Union and Japan, proposes that private-sector Internet stakeholders should be in charge of the new corporation.

"Business representation should reflect trends toward predominantly commercial use of the Internet," says the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce.

Domain name management is currently managed by a non-profit consortium. Anyone can reserve a domain name for a fee. Some private companies have reserved many domain names and are reselling them, and others will reserve names for you for a fee.
