Schneider National Inc., a Green Bay, Wisc.-based transportation solutions provider, has introduced a new stackable intermodal container. Schneider worked with Stoughton Trailers LLC and Wabash National Corp. to design the container to match the inside dimensions of a standard 53-foot trailer. According to Schneider, the new container can accommodate 25 pinwheeled pallets and meets both highway and rail requirements for conversion from over-the-road to rail. The container can be double stacked when used on the rail and is authorized for use on any railroad. Its interior height is 109.5 inches. "In order to simplify intermodal logistics, our containers have the same load capacity as our 53-foot van trailers, allowing for easy conversion from over-the-road to rail," says Brian Bowers, vice president and general manager of intermodal for Schneider National. The company is testing 200 units this fall and plans to fully deploy them in 2005.
