Awareness of the Y2K problem is acute in the corporate data centers, but many companies do not realize that most email packages are unprepared for the 2000 date change and will "self destruct", causing a loss of productivity, according to a report from the GartnerGroup Inc., Stamford, Conn. The information technology consulting firm maintains that 90% of electronic messaging product versions shipped prior to 1997 will fail to operate correctly when encountering dates beyond 1999. Significant consequences of non-compliant systems include returned, undelivered, and deleted messages. Fifty percent of enterprises will not begin their messaging migration until year-end 1998, and 50% of those will fail to complete it by the year 2000, says Gartner.
