There are manufacturers -- particularly semiconductor manufacturers -- who need precise and accurate microscopic examination of materials used to make their products. But many don't have access to the advanced microscopy and microanalysis instrumentation. So says the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST is seeking to address this problem by demonstrating and refining "long-distance" sharing and operation of electron microscopes at NIST's Gaithersburg, Md., site. NIST has produced a video, "You Don't Have to Be There . . . Telepresence Microscopy," which highlights the program. The 12-minute video shows how telepresence can provide manufacturers with remote, instantaneous, around-the-clock access to critical metrology services. The Telepresence Microscopy program works through inexpensive teleconferencing hardware and software that use Internet-based technology, according to NIST.
