Launched in March to benefit humanitarian efforts worldwide, the Red Cross lottery recently announced its first millionaire winner. Though not identified, the winner chose six correct numbers from his home in Greece via the Internet, and will receive 1.25 million Swiss francs (US$861,000) tax-free in Liechtenstein. To enter the game, players must set up an account with PLUS Lotto, which is debited for each bet and credited with winnings. The Red Cross receives 25% of gross proceeds, and pays out 50% in prize winnings. The remainder of the proceeds cover administrative costs, including 5% for charities of Liechtenstein, whose government-controlled lottery authorities operate the game.
