Merger Meltdown: By the Numbers

Dec. 10, 2008
In 2008 only 8 mergers with a value of $50 million or more were completed in Q3.

The total value of mergers and acquisitions in 2008 is well behind the $88 billion pace set in 2007, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) reports in "Assembling Value: Industrial Manufacturing Mergers and Acquisitions Analysis -- Third Quarter 2008." PwC attributes the decline to the credit crunch and fewer financial investors becoming involved with industrial manufacturing deals. According to the data of deals totaling $50 million or more:

9 were completed in first-quarter 2008

16 were completed in first-quarter 2007

10 were completed in second-quarter 2008

20 were completed in second-quarter 2007

27 were completed in second-quarter 2006

31 were completed in third-quarter 2006

12 were completed in third-quarter 2007

8 were completed in third-quarter 2008
