Tech innovator launches new Eco Innovation initiative; opens next-generation datacenters in U.S., U.K. and India

With green computing moving into the realm of business necessity, Santa Clara, Calif.-based Sun Microsystems, Inc. recently made two announcements which have solidified its environmental standing as a leader in the green tech sphere.

First, the global technology developer announced a suite of programs and solutions designed to help customers architect more energy efficient datacenters -- and save money in the process. The company's Eco Innovation initiative is an extension of Sun's Eco Responsibility Initiative, which was launched in November 2005. The new project adds what Sun is calling Eco Ready Kits and the Eco Services Suite to empower IT departments worldwide to join the growing list of businesses adding smart energy-saving technology to their existing IT portfolio.

The Santa Clara, Calif-based company also recently unveiled three new datacenters in Santa Clara, California; Blackwater, U.K.; and Bangalore, India. Put into operation between January and June of this year, all three datacenters were built using new designs and next-generation energy efficient systems, power and cooling.

Sun estimates that the company's datacenter efforts will save the planet nearly 4,100 tons of CO2 per year and trim 1% from Sun's total carbon footprint.

In the spirit of open-sourcing these new initiatives, Sun will post project information and results at:
