Bookshelf: The Kaizen Event Planner: Achieving Rapid Improvement In Office, Service and Technical Environments

March 12, 2009
By Karen Martin and Mike Osterling Productivity Press, 2009, 240 pages, $50

Designed as a practical how-to guide, the book takes readers through the ins and outs of planning and executing kaizen events in the office areas of manufacturing, the service sector and in knowledge-worker environments. The authors provide the methods and tools to help build a motivated workforce and lay a foundation for continuous improvement while breaking unproductive habits.

Guidance is provided on how to scope the activity, engage the right people and facilitate events with measurable results.

The book begins with background information about the Toyota Production System, the lean philosophy and the difference between the practice of ongoing, daily kaizen and kaizen events. The balance of the book centers on planning, execution and post-event follow-up of the kaizen event. The book is structured around a set of Excel-based tools and templates included on a CD. Detailed instructions for planning a kaizen event are included.
