LinkedIn CEO: Employees, Like Pitchers, Need to be Relieved

Feb. 3, 2014
"Leaving a member of your team in a key role when it's no longer the right fit is one of the most common -- and costly -- mistakes a manager can make," said Jeff Weiner, LinkedIn CEO.

Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn, in a recent post on the company's site, answered the evergreen question every leader is asked – and often asked repeatedly: What is the most valuable lesson you've learned as a CEO?

For Weiner, the answer can be found on the baseball diamond.

Employees, he says, like pitchers, shouldn't be left in the game for too long.

Weiner, who for five years has served as head of the business networking website, cautions against trusting the star performer – or star pitcher – to admit when the game has become too challenging or out of control.

He writes: "Leaving a member of your team in a key role when it's no longer the right fit is one of the most common -- and costly -- mistakes a manager can make. The good news is that with practice and experience it's also one of the most avoidable."

Weiner's complete post, "The Most Valuable Lesson I've Learned as a CEO," originally appeared on LinkedIn, as part of the LinkedIn Influencers program.
