Summary

For most manufacturers, robotics and automation systems are a pathway to profitable production, not the main product. But, a growing number of innovative companies are developing intelligent products that incorporate shop-floor technologies into consumer-facing products.

In this webinar, design and manufacturing experts will share how several companies launched intelligent new product lines, using considerable know-how from factory technologies.

Designing public-facing robotic systems is a different task than integrating systems into manufacturing environments where workers receive heavy training and user conditions are controlled.

Experts will discuss how to identify and overcome challenges such as:

  • Usability—Who is going to be using these automated systems, and how do designers take differing technical skill levels into account?
  • Functionality—How do designers ensure the system can meet all requirements to ensure seamless function, reduce operating issues, and to properly handle the contents to be dispensed or handled with the system?
  • Durability/Serviceability—How many more hands will be touching machines daily for an automated system in the wild vs. a controlled factory environment? Is the design robust enough, and how will technicians service it?
  • Scaling—Making one robotic system is an experiment. How can you get to profitable, high-volume manufacturing?

Speakers

Daniel Wright | Principal Engineer | Benchmark Electronics

Daniel Wright is a Principal Mechanical Engineer with his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Minnesota State University.  He has 20+ years of experience in mechanical design with focus areas in medical and automation packaging for mid/high volume manufacturability of robotics, plastics (injection molding, RIM, thermoforming, structural foam), machined parts, sheet metal, and castings. He has been a Lead Mechanical Engineer for 15 years, focusing on overall system integration.

Benjamin Williams | Mechanical Engineer III | Benchmark Electronics

Benjamin Williams is a seasoned mechanical engineer with over eight years of experience at Benchmark in Rochester, Minnesota, where he works as a Mechanical Engineer III. His work spans the design and development of medical and industrial devices, focusing on robotic motion, mechanisms, and design for manufacturing. Benjamin holds a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA from the Quantic School of Business and Technology.
