Raytheon Co. saved an estimated $2 million in energy costs in 2008 and since 2002 has cut energy intensity by more than 30%, the company said in a March 27 statement.
The defense systems manufacturer received the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award for its waste-reduction strategies. The company was recognized for its ongoing, successful enterprisewide management of strategies and programs to reduce energy consumption, improve energy efficiency and cut greenhouse gas emissions. This is the second consecutive year Raytheon has received the EPA award.
Over six years the company cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 232,000 metric tons. In 2008, Raytheon also launched its Energy Citizens campaign to encourage employees to practice energy efficiency at work and at home. More than 21,000 employees qualified as 2008 Energy Citizens. The company will continue the program in 2009.
Raytheon was selected from more than 12,000 public and private sector Energy Star program participants for the Sustained Excellence Award.
