AMR Research taps Penn State, Michigan State as top two

Recently, AMR Research, released a report identifing the top U.S.-based supply chain programs. Penn State University and Michigan State University took the top spots in terms of industry value, program depth and program scope.

The criteria to make the list was the school's ability to "best prepare students to manage increasingly global integrated supply chain organizations. The universities were measured across a total of 13 metrics, which includes number of recruiting mentions, supply chain course and program offerings, and best program mentions," explained AMR Research analyst Kevin Reilly.

"Our assessment showed many strong programs, with innovative teaching approaches and relevant research being conducted" said David Aquino, research director at AMR Research and lead author on the report. "The best programs create a more fully formed supply chain professional that allows a quick transition from recruit to being a productive member of their new organization."

Reily points out that "most academic institutions are only partially meeting the most pressing needs from industry, with supply chain programs on average teaching only 5 of 11 academic areas needed, inconsistently applying supply chain technology, and not ensuring sufficient applied knowledge transfer."

Highlights from the report include:
• MIT and University of Michigan had the highest average graduate base salaries at $116,000 and $100,000, respectively.
• Penn State has a large number of students, with more than 800 involved in the program. They also have 29 full-time professors focused on supply chain management.
• Michigan State offers over 39 supply chain courses and requires an average of eight to graduate.
