Compiled ByEric J. Merfalen According to a recent survey conducted by the National Foundation for Women Business Owners (NFWBO), philanthropic involvement is more common among business owners than the general population. In addition to such participation, many businesses have special programs to encourage employees to volunteer. The NFWBO also found that women are more likely than men to take on leadership roles in charitable organizations. The findings are based on a national survey of 226 women and 235 men business owners. A report on the survey included these conclusions:
  • Nine out of 10 of those surveyed contribute money to charities.
  • Nearly one-third make significant personal charitable contributions of $5,000 or more.
  • Seven out of 10 volunteer at least once a month.
  • 50% state that their level of financial support has increased in the last five years. When deciding what organizations to contribute to, the most important factor that business owners weighed was whether the organization was well run. The top three types of groups that are given the most financial support are religious, local community service, and youth-related organizations.
