LCDs Show Signs of New Potential

Developments in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are reshaping the range of potential applications. For example, Kent Displays Inc., Kent, Ohio, offers cholesteric LCD technology that challenges such conventional limitations as contrast, direct-sunlight viewability, and narrow viewing angles. The specifications for its Infosign products list a 25:1 typical contrast ratio, 40% reflectivity, and an unusually wide viewing angle. The company says the displays are ideal wherever information needs to be frequently and easily changed by computer. Typical applications include point-of-sale displays, lobby marquees, kiosk signs, teleprompters, and air- and bus-terminal information.
