The Iowa Dept. of Economic Development (IDED) has announced several new manufacturing projects that total more than $200 million:

  • Barilla America, a fully owned subsidiary of Barilla SpA of Italy, is building a $137 million plant in Ames that will produce more than 200 million pounds of pasta each year. The plant is Barilla's first U.S. site.
  • Olympic Steel is building a $37 million tempering plant in Bettendorf. The Milford, Conn., company will spend $22 million on a steel refinishing operation and $15 million for additional equipment.
  • Wacker Biochem Corp. of Germany is building a $26 million facility in Eddyville that will use corn starch from a Cargill plant to manufacture cyclodextrins, a substance used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

    The IDED also announced that Pella Corp., in Pella, is expanding its window-and-door operations and began constructing its fourth Iowa facility.
