Compiled ByJill Jusko St. Louis-based brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. says injuries among its employees have dropped by 31% and the lost-time injury rate has decreased by 22% since 1997. That's just one example of the type of performance documented in the company's 2001 environmental, health and safety (EHS) report, released Aug. 12. "We strive to continually improve our EHS performance by establishing meaningful goals, implementing effective programs and integrating EHS considerations into day-to-day business practices," says John Stier, director of environmental affairs. Other accomplishments noted in the report include:
  • In the last five years, water use has been reduced by 7%, electricity use by 6% and fuel use by 11%.
  • The company recycles 97% of all solid waste generated, which translates to more than 4.5 billion pounds per year.
  • Anheuser-Busch employs a wastewater treatment process that produces the renewable energy source biogas (methane), which reduces the company's reliance on fossil fuels.
