President Clinton, under pressure to demonstrate more leadership in addressing the Year 2000 (Y2K) computer problem, spoke at length on the topic July 14 before business leaders. Appearing at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., the President announced that he will propose good Samaritan legislation that will grant immunity to corporations from lawsuits if they share information about the problem. Many firms have resisted such sharing, fearing theyll be sued if the information they provide is inaccurate.

It makes no sense for every firm to have to reinvent the digital wheel, Clinton said. Businesses should be able to benefit from the experiences of other firms in the same situation that have found solutions or identified new obstacles.
