Web Commerce to Grow to $220 Billion by 2001

As a result of the increase in the number of buyers on the Web and the average transaction size, the amount of commerce conducted over the Web is expected to grow dramatically from $2.6 billion in 1996 to more than $220 billion in 2001, according to a report published by International Data Corp. ( IDC). The results are part of a continually updated IDC model of the Web based on 40,000 primary research interviews per year in 17 countries. Additional key findings include:

The number of devices accessing the Web will grow from 32 million worldwide in 1996 to more than 300 million in 2001.

The number of users associated with these devices will expand from 28 million at year end 1996 to 175 million by yearend 2001.

Growth of users outside the United States will be most dramatic with the U.S. percent of total Web users dropping from 65% in 1996 to 54% by yearend 2001.

The percentage of users buying goods and services over the Web will grow from 25% in 1996 to 39% in 2001.
