The latest Atlas Van Lines survey found that there's either age discrimination in corporate transfers or that workers older than 45 are just unwilling to relocate. That latter group of employees accounted for just 4% of all transferred workers in 1999. By contrast, employees in their 30s account for 58% of all workers who were transferred by their companies. Another 20% of those transferred were between 25 and 30. The two reasons employee cited most when turning down transfers: concerns about the cost-of-the-living in the new city and housing and mortgage cost concerns. Interestingly, 22% declined to move because they thought the job transfer would hurt their career.
