Compiled ByJill Jusko There's a new Web site for students, teachers and steel-industry employees who would like to learn more about ferrous metallurgy. Launched by the International Iron and Steel Institute in Brussels, Belgium, the Internet Learning of Steel Applications and Processes at www.ilsap.org lets users produce a particular grade of steel and then see if the chosen grade is suitable for the manufacture of automotive door panels. Two demonstration modules are available. In the first module the user is presented with a ladle of molten steel. The user then must decide what additions to make, when to make them and which processes to use to get the composition and temperature adjusted so that the ladle is ready for casting at the correct time. In the second module, the user much choose a high-strength steel grade that is suitable for automotive door panels with the correct performance criteria of strength, stiffness and other factors.
