Petro-Canada, one of Canada's largest oil and gas companies, reports that it voluntarily cut total 1999 greenhouse gas emissions to 4% below 1990 levels, despite a 39% increase in production over that period. "We are responding to public concern about greenhouse gas emissions with continued investment to improve the energy efficiency of our operations, and we are acting to reduce emissions from sources such as flaring and minor emissions from valves and other equipment," says Ron Brenneman, president and CEO. Initiatives have cut more than 1.3 million tons of annual carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions since 1990, according to Petro-Canada, a US$4.2 billion company based in Calgary. "Voluntary action tends to be more economically efficient than imposed solutions," Benneman says. More information on the cuts is available in the company's annual progress report on emissions.
