The National Association of Manufacturers, the Business Roundtable and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are among 15 business groups promoting a plan to double the number of U.S. science, technology, engineering and mathematics graduates by 2015.

Released in late July and dubbed "Tapping Americas Potential: The Education for Innovation Initiative," the plan calls for creating a national awareness of how critical science, technology, engineering and mathematics are to maintaining U.S. leadership in innovation, motivating students and adults to study and pursue careers in these fields, upgrading elementary and secondary school teaching in math and science, reforming U.S. visa and immigration policies to attract and retain foreign students, and increasing funding for basic research.

Making more employees available to serve as mentors and role models is one of the efforts U.S. companies are saying they'll undertake.
