Acronym Alert: P&PLM

July 13, 2007
A new platform combines PLM software with MES software to integrate product design with shop floor production processes.

UGS PLM Software, a business unit of industrial giant Siemens created following the acquisition of UGS Inc., has launched a new strategy that doesn't even have a handy acronym yet, so for now we'll call it P&PLM, which stands for product and production lifecycle management. This new platform combines PLM software with manufacturing execution system (MES) software with the aim of integrating product design with shop floor production processes.

As Joe Barkai, practice director for the Product Lifecycle Strategies practice at analyst firm Manufacturing Insights, explains, "In the next generation of PLM, we expect to see that PLM is as much about effective product lifecycle decision-making as it is about product engineering. PLM tools must be used not only to support engineering tasks, but, more importantly, to create and manage a comprehensive product management strategy, culture and processes."
