Laser-based data collection will soon be operating at light speed thanks to the use of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), a type of nanotechnology. Using this technology, the EL10 scanner made by Intermec Technologies Inc. operates at 500 scans per second compared to a standard laser rate of 50 scans per second.

The EL10 has the potential to go to 4,000 scans per second. It is composed of a micro-mirror and associated drive motor 1/66 the size of those used in standard scanners -- making the scanner more compact.

All of this speed should get information through the supply chain faster and provide better visibility.
