SKF's Efficient Bearings

April 10, 2007
Energy consumtpion will be reduced 30%.

Energy efficiency, a traditional focus within The SKF Group, will be raised to a higher level as it introduces a new bearing family. SKF says the designs will reduce energy consumption by at least 30% compared with standard ISO products. Initial production will start with the two most used types, the deep-grooved ball bearing and the tapered roller bearings, says Tom Johnstone, president and CEO. He says the new family maintains the service life and load-carrying capacity of standard ISO bearings.

The new tapered roller bearing will initially target industrial segments where applications exceed 1 MW power consumption, according to SKF. Typical examples are found in railway applications and transmissions used in heavy industry, ships, wind energy, conveyors and extruders. The initial size range: 200 mm to 600 mm outside diameter. The first applications are expected to be in wind turbines, SKF adds.

The company says the technical improvements that deliver the energy savings are design related, such as surface topography and raceway profiles and geometry, together with a special polymer cage and an optimized set of rollers.

Initial applications for the deep-groove ball bearings will be in industrial electrical motors. Its technical improvements include optimized internal geometry, a new polymer cage and lower friction grease.
