This week's lead story doesn't hail from the tech section but it constitutes a warning about how not to use AI and provides guidance for best use cases. For example, don't use the technology to replace headcount, rather use it to tighten organizational structures and take menial tasks away from talented people to free them for more useful work.
When I cover stories about robotics and automation, I rarely (if ever?) hear manufacturers say they used the technology to reduce headcount. The human operators "replaced" by the automation on one line often shift to another, different line that could use some help. Headcount remains the same and productivity increases on both lines. AI can serve a similar function.
Our lead story also dovetails nicely with my entry in this week's So That Happened segment about companies not seeing ROI from their investments in AI because they don't have a plan before they get started. This week's lead story might help you make one.
