Microsoft And RFID Converge

March 19, 2007
Web-based software systems integrate RFID functionality.

Attendees at this month's Microsoft Convergence conference were treated to a number of displays from companies eager to demonstrate how RFID technology can fit in with logistics and supply chain solutions. Capitalizing on industry trends, a number of ISVs showcased how Web-based solutions for Microsoft Dynamics ERP packages can deliver manufacturers real-time visibility and control from the receipt of raw materials on to the shipping dock, and onwards to the customer's door.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based ICS recently announced the latest release of its rfsmart package designed to provide end-to-end supply chain control for Microsoft's Dynamics AX 4.0. With configurable RFID functionality and built on a .NET technology framework with web service-oriented architecture, a product like rfsmart promises highly scalable, flexible and accurate control of inventory. ICS also offers a rfsmart Mobile handheld solution that extends this tracking capability into the field, allowing manufacturers to track inventory on delivery vehicles, capture customer signatures upon delivery (and even take new orders while on-site).

Toronto, Ont.-based Radio Beacon Inc.'s warehouse management system (WMS) promises a seamless integration with Microsoft's Dynamics GP ERP package that, like rfsmart, is a Web-based and therefore highly flexible and scalable. Built on a back office suite developed by Blue Moon Industries, the higher functionality modules that Radio Beacon offer use RFID to improve efficiency at every step of the warehouse process, from receiving, inventory movement, picking, packing and shipping.
