Toyota South Africa Resolves Wage Dispute

Oct. 4, 2012
The company was the only car manufacturer affected by an industrial dispute outside the mining sector which has been rocked by violent mass protests since August.

A wage dispute that slowed production for three days at Toyota (IW 1000/5) South Africa Motors’ plant south of Durban in the east coast, has been resolved.

Company spokesman Leo Kok said the dispute was linked to implementation of a 2010 bargaining agreement.

"We are happy that we could resolve the dispute in such an amicable and speedy manner and we look forward to returning to full production tomorrow," said Kok.

The firm which produces 120,000 vehicles a year is the seventh biggest distributor of Toyota vehicles outside Japan, according to the company.

Kok would not quantify the financial impact of the strike to the company.
