Manufacturers are very hesitant to part with funds for IT projects this year. According to a recent study by Info-Tech Research Group, London,ON, 21% of manufacturing companies plan to decrease IT spending this year, as compared to an average of 14% for other industries.
Spending varied by markets as the non-perishable/goods segment spent five times more per employee on IT than the steel/metal segment.
When manufacturers do decide to invest in IT, the highest priority is for voice over Internet Protocol followed by supply chain management and customer relationship management systems.
More than 1,400 IT decision makers at mid-sized enterprises in Canada, the U.S. and U.K took part of the January 2005 survey.
