Continuing his emphasis on education as a theme of his second term, President Clinton has announced that he intends later this year to convene a group of business leaders specifically to discuss ways that they can contribute to raising student performance across our country. Clinton made the remark in kicking off an education roundtable at a suburban-Washington school March 16 during which he repeated his call for national standards and testing in elementary and secondary schools, more charter schools, and greater use of mentoring in middle schools.

The President later repeated many of his remarks at an evening dinner of the Democratic Business Council, an organization of business executives who contribute heavily to the Democratic party. He also called for all students to be required to take chemistry, physics, calculus, and trigonometry.
