Chrysler Corp. will invest $1.2 billion in a new 1.1-million-square-foot manufacturing facility in Toledo, Ohio, for the production of Jeep sport-utility vehicles. Some $600 million will go for the new assembly plant, adjacent to an existing plant on the city's north side, with construction beginning in 1998 and production slated for 2001.

Says Chrysler chairman Robert Eaton, "The entire corporation was touched by the outpouring of support displayed by the people of Toledo. With historical roots going back to the early part of this century, the brand name Jeep always has been and will continue to be synonymous with the city of Toledo."
