Agribusiness is beginning to consider the merit of pollution prevention, in effect minimizing waste by controlling the process. At the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society the concept was presented in the context of the poultry industry by researcher Paul H. Patterson of Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa. Noting the benefits of nutrient management in terms of cost and animal health, he also observed that management of poultry feed can also control the amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous that passes through the birds and becomes a waste-disposal problem. U.S. lawmakers have expressed interest in the Netherlands' policy on manure and ammonia and its nutrient equilibrium aims.
