Champion International Corp., in partnership with The Conservation Fund, has completed the largest multi-state conservation project in U.S. history. With its recent sale of 84,000 acres of forests in Vermont, Champion now has sold 300,000 acres to organizations dedicated to preserving land in its natural state. The 300,000 acres are located in New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. The Conservation Fund helped to complete the transactions to partnerships consisting of private investors, foundations, public agencies, and the nonprofit conservation community. Champion, a major producer and distributor of coated and uncoated papers, still manages 11 million acres of forests that support its manufacturing facilities.
