Economic turmoil hardly seems the best setting for bringing Russia and China into the World Trade Organization (WTO). But that's what the trade rules-writing organization's CEO is advocating.
"This step is a priority to help free international trade, enable Asia to recover from its business and financial crisis and to reduce the risk of a global recession," asserts Renato Ruggiero, WTO's secretary general. He plans talks soon with the U.S. and other key WTO members about negotiations with China and Russia. "The rest of the world must not give countries such as these the impression that the present turmoil could cut them off from the global economy," Ruggiero says.
