In his new book, Leading at the Edge: Leadership Lessons from the Extraordinary Saga of Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition, author Dennis N.T. Perkins taps into the survival story of explorer Ernest Shackleton to reveal 10 lessons on what it takes to be a great business leader. In 1914 Shackleton boarded the Endurance with his team of seamen and scientists, intent upon crossing the Antarctic continent. After two years of unexpected perils, including being marooned on an island, the explorers finally were rescued. Not one man was lost. Perkins reveals how Shackleton's vision, actions, and philosophy of leadership provide a compass to executives and managers in today's climate of fierce competition, economic uncertainty, and constant change. Among the 10 lessons discussed by Perkins are:

  • Keep an eye on long-term goals while focusing energy on short-term objectives.
  • Continually strive for creative solutions -- and refuse to give up.
