Toledo-based Dana Corp. announced a program to certify all of its 170 plants to the ISO 14001 standard by 2002. Fifty-one plants already are certified and another 119 have begun the process. Dana has plants in 33 countries and supplies every major automotive and truck manufacturer in the world. The ISO environmental-management system requires companies to go beyond compliance by taking into consideration energy consumption, product lifecycle, waste minimization, and other natural-resource benefits. Product design and research also is analyzed to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals as well as hazardous waste. After certification, the program is reviewed each year in order to continually improve the system. "We believe this commitment is completely in line with the Dana style and with Dana policy to protect the environment and to be a good citizen globally," says Joe Magliochetti, Dana's chairman and CEO.
