In New Zealand, Clinton And Gore Take Opposite Side

New Zealand's national highway authority has given approval for the 25-mile stretch of road between Clinton and Gore on the country's South Island to be renamed the Presidential Highway. But the White House announcement of tariffs on lamb imports from New Zealand and Australia has upset Gore's mayor, Mary Ogg. She immediately called for the renaming to be dropped, but Mayor Juno Hayes of neighboring Clutha District, which includes the small community of Clinton, says he is "quietly confident" of getting the plan back on track in time for President Bill Clinton to view the highway when he visits New Zealand in September for summit meeting of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum leaders. While critical of the three-year tariffs on lamb, Hayes says, "It's better to keep the dialogue going."
