Beginning in the fall of 2005, Stanford University's Department of Mechanical Engineering will offer an online master's of science degree in mechanical engineering. All online courses are taught by Stanford faculty and delivered via the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD). The Stanford, Calif.-based university says degree applicants can pursue a master's degree at a distance in four areas of concentration: automatic controls, design for manufacturability, design methodology and solid mechanics. Students who pursue master's degrees online through SCPD "are held to the same high academic standards as on-campus students," explains Andy DiPaolo, SCPD executive director. Industry professionals who want admission to the autumn online program must apply by Jan. 15, 2005, for consideration. Twenty-two Stanford master's of science degree concentrations are currently available online.
