To protect your company Web site from hackers, implement "layers" of defense, says KPMG LLP consultants. "Building a good defense against hackers is just like preparing to go out in the cold," says Tom Talleur, managing director in KPMG's forensic and litigation services practice. "The more layers you apply, the better protected you'll be." Talleur's defensive checklist includes:

  • Implement network intrusion detection systems.
  • Shut down unneeded services so they can't be exploited.
  • Shut down Internet control message protocol services when warranted.
  • Create redundant Internet service provider arrangements.
  • Consult a knowledgeable forensic professional with cyber crime experience.
