DaimlerChrysler Corp. has presented seven teams of employees with its CHEER (Continuously Honors Environmental Excellence with Recognition) awards. The winners were selected from 98 nominated teams with more than 850 members. "The pollution prevention efforts of these teams have eliminated more than 875 million pounds of waste from the air, water, soil, and at the same time they have added business value by saving the company money," says James A. Carlson, director of pollution prevention or environmental improvements for DaimlerChrysler. Among the teams' accomplishments:

  • Phytoremediation, a process which uses plants to extract contaminants from soil, was used at the decommissioned Detroit Forge Plant to clean up approximately 5,800 cubic yards of lead-impacted soil.
  • In 1998 the Indianapolis Foundry recycled more than 132,000 tons of sand that in previous years went to the landfill. The efforts saved $594,000.
  • DaimlerChrysler teams identified significant recycling ideas -- from design through production -- that will be incorporated within five years.
