A U.S. government-supported technology center will be constructed on the world headquarters campus of Kennametal Inc., a machine tools manufacturer based in Latrobe, Pa. The not-for-profit National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining will test and develop advanced machining and manufacturing processes for military equipment and weapons systems, according to Kennametal and U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha, D-Pa. Additionally, it will work on low-cost replacement parts for existing military equipment. Kennametal will administer the center, construction of which is expected to begin early in 2004, and lead a consortium of businesses and researchers collaborating to develop products and systems. The 30,000-square-foot structure is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2004. Staffing for the center will start early in 2003.
