A record 54 million motor vehicles were manufactured globally in 1997, which translates into a 5.5% increase in production, according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers. In the United States, car and truck production by Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors increased 2.6% to more than 9.5 million units.

The association also released the following information:

  • World car production increased 5.4% to 38.8 million units.
  • World light-commercial-vehicle production rose 4.7% to 12.9 million units.
  • World industrial-vehicle production increased 11% to 2.3 million units.
  • World bus and coach production rose 7% to 160,000 units.
