Companies pegged as polluters might begin receiving feedback from users of a new Web site by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). The site, EDF Chemical Scorecard, combines scientific, geographic, technical, and legal information from more than 150 electronic databases to produce detailed local reports on toxic chemical pollution, according to its creators.

Visitors see U.S. chemical pollution sources and hazards in detail on local street maps. Reports based on the most current federal pollution data are available by state, county, or zip code; and users can use the EDF Chemical Scorecard to send a customized letter to a facilitys key official.

The site ranks some 17,000 polluting facilities. The top-volume polluting facilities in the U.S., as measured by total chemical releases to the environment, are Magnesium Corp. of America in Rowley, Utah, and Asarco Inc., East Helena, Mont., according to the rankings.

EDF is a New York-based environmental organization.
