Commercial partners are being sought for a new, easy-to-use method of converting Nitrate wastes, both solid and liquid, into nitrogen gas. The developers, scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, N. Mex., claim the new nonthermal, nonbiological process is neither energy intensive, expensive to use, nor a source for harmful waste residues. It uses a unique transition metal/acid mixture that strips oxygen atoms from nitrates, converting them first to nitrites and ultimately to nitrogen gas. The gas can then be either recaptured or released into the atmosphere.
