Most large companies are reluctant to abandon client/server technology in favor of intranet technologies, according to a study conducted by Business Research Group, a division of Reed Elsevier Information, Newton, Mass. Titled When Worlds Collide: Intranets Meet Distributed Computing, the study found that 80% of respondents believe that intranet technology will be built upon existing client/server infrastructures. Only 13% felt their intranet solutions would completely replace their legacy systems. Seventy-six percent of respondents indicated security was the top concern, with system performance the second-most cited concern. The survey was conducted among 330 information-system executives and line-of-business managers across manufacturing and service companies.
