Innovest Strategies Value Advisors, an international investment advisory firm, has ranked Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. No. 1 among the top 23 U.S. pharmaceutical companies for environmental performance. Innovest's rating is based on more than 60 factors, including environmental management systems, emissions to air, water and soil, and compliance records with government agencies. Innovest also combined the environmental records of the companies with their stock performances from Feb. 1999 to Feb. 2000, to generate the ranking. "We believe the confluence of environmental and economic interests will continue to drive exceptional business performance in the future," says Thomas M. Hellman, vice president of Environment, Health & Safety for Bristol-Myers Squibb. Among Bristol-Myers Squibb's accomplishments:

  • Global consumption of water decreased by 43%.
  • Global consumption of fuel decreased by 28%.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 21%.
