Compiled ByPeter Strozniak Three contracts valued at $80 million mark the first non-automotive business for Delphi Automotive Systems Corp. Delphi, a Troy-Mich.-based auto-parts manufacturer, says it will make electronic control assemblies for a major North American appliance manufacturer. The contracts require Delphi to manufacture sub-assemblies for washers and dryers, and electronic modules for refrigerators. Delphi will manufacture the sub-assemblies in its Foley, Ala.-based plant. Products will be tested and shipped to the customer's manufacturing locations in North and Central America. Delphi declined to identify the appliance manufacturer. "We're continuing to develop the consumer appliance industry as a potential market by gaining a better understanding of its technology needs," says Jim Spencer, vice president of Delphi. "Earning this business demonstrates that we are capable of growing sales outside of the automotive industry by applying existing technology and manufacturing expertise to related markets." Spencer is also president of Delphi Packard Electric Systems, the business unit that was formed in March to diversify Delphi's customer base. Delphi Packard is also marketing its products such as connection systems, switches, and sensors to the agriculture, communications, military, and aerospace industries.
