U.S. industrial investors are optimistic about Eastern Europe, judging by a sharp rise in interest in the regions venture capital funds. Kurt Geiger, head of financial institutions at the European Bank of Reconstruction & Development, reports capital committed to private-sector funds in former Iron Curtain countries doubled to US$3 billion in 1997. The rate of increase is expected to be even higher this year.
