Compiled ByPeter Strozniak The New York City chapter of the Council of Logistics Management, the Logistics & e-Supply Chain Forum, and the American Red Cross say logistics resources are needed for the recovery and clean up of World Trade Center destroyed by terrorists Sept. 11. A small staff from the logistics division of Deere and Co., Moline, Ill., has volunteered to coordinate transportation services and deliver equipment and supplies to the Trade Center site and warehouses. Says Jay Fortenberry, director of worldwide logistics for Deere and Co. "[Relief workers are having] a difficult time communicating out so we are now being their clearinghouse right now to assemble a database of logistics providers around the nation that are willing to contribute warehouse space, trucking services, and safety equipment." The logistic support needs include warehouse space in the New York area and nationwide, lift gate trucks, and general transportation services that can deliver into Manhattan. There is also a need for industrial refrigerators, ice machines or deliveries of ice, as well as work clothes, boots, safety goggles, gloves, masks, protective clothing, and rain gear. The Red Cross also is asking for e-mail capabilities and mobile phones. Anyone wishing to donate logistics services, warehouse space, or supplies can contact Fortenberry at [email protected] or call 309/748-5900. To provide cell phones or e-mail capabilities contact Jeana Nordstrom of the New York City Roundtable of the Council of Logistics Management at [email protected] or Jane Telfer at [email protected].
