The pounds, gallons, feet, and inches treasured by the Americans, British, and Irish are headed for extinction in Europe. However, senior officials of the 15-nation European Union are now calling for a postponement of a Year 2000 deadline for labeling products only in metric units. The reason: Separate labeling for Europe and the U.S. will be too costly. It appears the delay could last 10 years.
